Knowing that you are going to see your child less often because of divorce can be heartbreaking as a father. You may worry that the bond between yourself and your child will weaken throughout the years and that you may not be granted the custody arrangement that you deserve,

While these are valid concerns, there is no reason to say that you will not be able to gain custody as a father. It is important, however, that you have a clear understanding of the law and that you take positive steps toward filing for custody. The following are some general tips that will help you in your journey.

Have the confidence to know what you deserve

Many fathers tend to lack confidence in being proactive in establishing custody. This is sometimes because the mother of the child gives them a reason to believe that successfully gaining joint custody will be difficult. It may also be because fathers worry about how they will balance fatherhood with their job. Whatever the reason, you should act confidently when attempting to gain custody.

Be true to your child’s best interests

No matter what your preferences are, it is important to step back and think about what is in the best interests of the child. Usually, children benefit from having a strong relationship with both parents, as well as a stable and predictable schedule.

If you are going through a divorce and are consequently preparing to become a single father, it is important that you create a strategy based firmly on family law principals. By attempting to have a collaborative relationship with the other parent, you will have the best chance of success.
